ChatGPT Writing Block Complete Guide — Polish Emails, Blog Posts & Social Content In-Chat
ChatGPT's 'Writing Block' is an inline editable draft area that replaced Canvas in May 2026. Available on all plans including free, it lets you edit text directly, rewrite selected portions, and even send emails to Gmail without leaving the chat.
"ChatGPT wrote me a great email, but the opening line feels a bit off…" Sound familiar? Today's ChatGPT has a feature called the Writing Block that lets you fix exactly that — right inside the chat window. From email drafts to blog posts and social media content, here's everything you need to know to get the most out of it.
What Is a Writing Block?
In short, it's a dedicated, editable text area that appears inside the chat.
ChatGPT used to have a feature called Canvas — a split-screen panel on the right side of the chat where you could co-edit documents. It was popular, but Canvas was retired in May 2026.
Writing Blocks are its replacement. Instead of a side panel, an editable draft area now appears inline within the chat — seamlessly integrated into the conversation flow.
Writing Blocks are available on all ChatGPT plans, including the free tier. No special settings or paid upgrades are required to start using them.
Canvas vs. Writing Block
Canvas (until May 2026)
Split-screen layout with a dedicated editing panel on the right. Required switching attention between the chat and the editor. Limited model support — less accessible on free plans.
Writing Block (current)
Editable draft area appears directly inside the chat window. Feels like a natural extension of the conversation. Available on every plan, including free.
What Can You Do With It?
① Click to Edit Directly
When a Writing Block appears, you can click anywhere in the text and start typing — just like a simple text editor. No copy-pasting required for small fixes.
② Ask AI to Rewrite Only a Selected Section
The biggest advantage of Writing Blocks is partial rewrites. Simply highlight the sentence or paragraph you want changed, then type your instruction — "make this more casual" or "shorten this." Only the selected text is rewritten; the rest stays exactly as it was.
For example: ChatGPT drafts an email, but the closing feels too formal. Highlight that one sentence, type "make it warmer," and it's done — without touching the rest of the email.
③ Send Emails Directly to Gmail (Paid Plans)
From June 5, 2026, you can send emails directly from a Writing Block to Gmail or Outlook — without leaving ChatGPT. Draft, review, and send, all in one place.
Gmail and Outlook direct sending is available on Plus, Pro, Team, and Enterprise plans only. Free users can draft and edit text in Writing Blocks but won't see the send button. Also, direct sending currently works on the desktop web browser only.
Real-World Use Cases
Work Emails — Professional Without Being Stiff
Ask: "Write a thank-you email to our client after today's meeting." ChatGPT produces a draft in a Writing Block.
If the closing line sounds too stiff, highlight it and type "make this a bit warmer." Only that line changes — the rest of the email is untouched. This saves far more time than rewriting the whole thing from scratch.
Blog Posts — Beat the Blank Page
Ask: "Give me 3 different opening lines for a blog post about AI tools for freelancers." Three options appear in a Writing Block.
Pick the one that resonates, add your own voice, and you're writing. Many writers find that seeing concrete options breaks through the mental block of starting from nothing.
Social Media — Hit the Right Tone and Length
Ask: "Summarize this blog post as an X (Twitter) post under 140 characters." A compact draft appears instantly.
From there: "Make it more conversational," "Add an emoji," "End with a question" — fine-tune until it's exactly right.
When creating social posts, try asking for 3 variations at once. Comparing options side-by-side makes it much easier to choose the tone you want.
