Is Free Gemini Enough? Free vs. Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra — Which Plan Fits You

Gemini now comes in four tiers: Free, Google AI Plus (¥725/month in Japan), AI Pro (¥2,900) and AI Ultra (from ¥14,500). Here is how they differ in price, storage and usage limits as of October 2026 — and which plan makes sense for which kind of user.

Confused by how many paid Gemini plans there are? You're not alone. As of October 2026, Gemini has four tiers including the free one. This guide lays out the price differences and helps you figure out which one fits you.

What Is This?

In short, each plan bundles how much you can use Google's Gemini AI with how much Google storage you get.

Paid plans are tied to Google One, Google's storage subscription for Gmail, Drive and Photos. That means even light AI users can justify a plan simply as a storage upgrade.

What Changed?

At Google I/O in May 2026, Google reorganized its AI subscriptions into three paid tiers: Plus, Pro and Ultra. On June 8, AI Plus in Japan dropped from ¥1,200 to ¥725 per month, and its storage doubled from 200GB to 400GB. (In the US, Plus is $4.99, Pro is $19.99, and Ultra starts at $99.99.)

Japanese monthly prices as of October 2026: Free / AI Plus ¥725 / AI Pro ¥2,900 / AI Ultra ¥14,500 or ¥32,000. Per day, that's roughly ¥24 for Plus and ¥97 for Pro.

How usage is counted has also changed. Instead of a fixed number of prompts per day, limits are reportedly based on how much compute each task uses. Quick questions barely dent your quota, while heavy jobs like video generation use it up faster.

How Can You Actually Use It?

At home: If your phone keeps warning that storage is full, AI Plus is the best value. For ¥725 you get 400GB plus double the Gemini usage, shareable with up to five family members.

At work: If you use Gemini daily for email drafts and document summaries, AI Pro is the sweet spot. It can read files of up to 1,500 pages, so you can hand it an entire report at once.

Summarizing a long meeting deck on the free tier, you hit "limit reached" halfway through. Your only option was to wait a few hours.

現在

With AI Pro you get 4x the free usage. Three document summaries and ten email drafts before lunch — without interruption.

For side projects: Heavy video creators and developers may want to look at Ultra. But at ¥14,500 and up per month, most people simply don't need it.

Ultra doesn't get the newest model yet

Gemini 4 Argon, announced on September 30, isn't available even to Ultra subscribers yet. See our Argon article for details.

Summary

Free Gemini handles everyday questions and research perfectly well. If storage is your pain point, AI Plus at ¥725/month is the pick; if you use Gemini for work every day, AI Pro at ¥2,900/month is the one to get. Ultra is for the small group running large volumes of video or coding work. For a cross-vendor view including ChatGPT and Claude, see our five-service pricing comparison.
