Which Free AI Is Smartest? Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini (October 2026)

October 2026 reshuffled the free tiers of the big three AI assistants. Claude's free plan now runs the latest Sonnet 5.5, while Gemini's free tier is limited to a lightweight model. Here's how the free and ~$20/month plans compare, so you can pick the right one.

Is the free version of an AI assistant good enough, or should you pay? In October 2026, the answer changed: what you get for free from the big three AI assistants shifted significantly. If you picked one back in September, it may be worth taking another look.

What Is This?

This is an up-to-date comparison of the three most popular AI chat services. They are Anthropic's Claude, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Google's Gemini. All three work in a mobile app or browser — you just ask a question.

Over the past month, all three companies shipped new models. The model is the "brain" behind the app. Same app, different model — and a noticeably different level of quality.

What Changed

① Claude: the free plan gets the latest Sonnet 5.5

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on September 28. Free users get it by default the moment they open the app. On the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, Sonnet 5.5 reportedly scores 56.0, the highest among the three mid-tier models.

② ChatGPT: free tier moves to the lighter GPT-6 Luna

Starting October 7, OpenAI swapped the models inside ChatGPT. Free and Go users now get GPT-6 Luna, a fast, lightweight model. Plus ($20/month) and above get the more capable GPT-6 Sol.

③ Gemini: free tier reduced to a lightweight model only

From October 9, Google reportedly limited free users to a single model. That model is the lightweight Flash-Lite. Free users used to be able to try the higher-end models a little, so this is effectively a price increase.

As of October, Claude is the only one of the three that gives free users its latest mid-tier model. ChatGPT and Gemini have moved their free tiers to lighter models.

Google has also announced its top model, Gemini 4 Argon. However, the October 13 launch was for paid developer access (the API — the way apps plug into the model). Everyday users will likely have to wait a bit longer.

How Can You Use Them?

Scenario 1: Monday-morning status report (work)

Paste last week's meeting notes and ask, "Summarize this in three lines for my manager." Organizing long text clearly is one of Claude's strengths. Even on the free plan, you get a polished report in seconds.

以前

Free AI plans mostly ran lightweight "trial" models. For anything important at work, you ended up needing a paid plan.

現在

Claude's free plan now runs the latest Sonnet 5.5. Drafting reports and emails no longer requires a subscription.

Scenario 2: Planning a family trip (home)

Ask, "Plan a one-night trip for a family of four next month, budget $550." ChatGPT's free Luna model is fast and great for quick, casual questions. Its wide range of features, like image creation and voice chat, is a big plus.

Scenario 3: Sorting out Gmail and Calendar (everyday life)

If you live in Gmail, Gemini is the natural fit. You can ask, "What's on my schedule this week, and which emails need a reply?" The free tier runs a lightweight model, but it handles this kind of organizing well.

What Does It Cost?

All three paid plans cost roughly $20 a month.

Claude Pro
$20
/month
  • ✓Sonnet 5.5 available even on Free
  • ✓Paid plan raises usage limits
  • ✓Includes top-tier Opus 5.5
ChatGPT Plus
$20
/month
  • ✓Free and Go ($8) run GPT-6 Luna
  • ✓Plus unlocks GPT-6 Sol
  • ✓Strong image and voice features
Google AI Pro
$19.99
/month
  • ✓Free tier is Flash-Lite only
  • ✓Pro unlocks Flash, Pro and Deep Think
  • ✓Includes Google Drive storage

That works out to about 65 cents a day — less than a cup of coffee for an extra assistant on your team.

ヒント

Start by asking all three free versions the same question. Everyone prefers a different style of answer. Only pay for the one you find yourself using every day.

Watch out

Every free plan has usage limits. Gemini reportedly uses both a 5-hour limit and a weekly cap. Leave some headroom so you don't get cut off in the middle of important work.

Summary

October 2026 reshaped the free AI landscape. If you want the smartest AI without paying, Claude is currently the strongest pick. ChatGPT wins on breadth of features, and Gemini on integration with Google services.

Claude's free plan is especially good for anyone who wants help with work writing at no cost. Choose Gemini if your day revolves around Gmail and Calendar, and ChatGPT if you want images and voice too.
