"Should I use Chat or Cowork?" — If you've ever hesitated, wondering which one to open, this is good news for you.

On September 16, 2026, Anthropic announced that Claude's "Chat" and "Cowork" would be merged into a single application. At the same time, two brand-new features launched: "Claude Docs" and "Claude Slides," which let you create documents and presentation decks directly from within a conversation.

What you'll learn in this article

  • What actually changes when Chat and Cowork are unified
  • What the new features Claude Docs and Claude Slides can do
  • When and which plans will get access

What Is This?

In a single sentence: it's a system where you use one entry point, and Claude figures out the rest.

Previously, Claude came in two flavors: "Chat" for quick questions and advice, and "Cowork" for longer tasks that required reading files or running code in the background. Knowing which one to use was itself a friction point — and switching between them mid-task was a common frustration.

After this unification, there's just one "Claude." It answers short questions directly, and when a task calls for more complex work, it automatically draws on Cowork's capabilities behind the scenes. You never have to think about which mode to open.

What Changed?

以前

There were two separate products — "Chat" and "Cowork" — and users had to decide which to open every time. It was easy to start in Chat and realize mid-task that you needed Cowork, forcing a context switch.

現在

Just talk to one "Claude." Claude reads your request and decides on its own whether to respond inline or invoke Cowork capabilities automatically.

Three New Capabilities You Can Now Use

Claude Docs Create and edit documents (written content) directly inside the conversation. Say "Summarize this into a report" and the document appears on the spot. Collaborative editing with multiple people is also supported, making it useful for team workflows.

Claude Slides Build presentation decks straight from a conversation. Say "Turn this proposal into slides" and Claude produces a deck with properly formatted headings and bullet points.

Claude Design Design-assistance features that were previously only accessible from a separate screen are now available directly within the conversation.

Background execution — the ability to keep processing even after you close your laptop — is a strength carried over from Cowork. File reading, web search, and code execution are all triggered automatically from the same conversation. Kicking off a long task and checking the results later has become much smoother.

How Can You Actually Use It?

Scenario 1: Turn meeting notes into formal minutes Say "Based on the notes from our meeting just now, write up the minutes." Claude Docs opens automatically and produces a formatted set of minutes. It comes out ready to share with your team, so the usual cleanup work is drastically reduced.

Scenario 2: Turn a proposal into presentation slides Just ask: "Turn the contents of this proposal into 10 slides." A presentation with organized headings and bullet points is ready within seconds. Preparation time for internal presentations is significantly cut.

Scenario 3: Ask questions while reading a long document Hand Claude a 100-page PDF and ask: "What are the key points from Chapter 3?" You don't have to choose Chat or Cowork yourself — Claude handles it appropriately either way.

To try it right now, you'll need a Pro plan ($20/month). Anthropic has said the rollout to Free and Team plans will follow "in a few weeks." Starting with Pro to test it before committing is a perfectly reasonable approach.

Rollout May Take Time

Even for Pro and Max users, the update is rolling out gradually across the web app, desktop, and mobile. If it's not showing up yet, wait a few days and check again.

Summary

Claude's Chat and Cowork are merging, so you'll never have to think about which one to open again. On top of that, new features let you create documents and slides without leaving the conversation — fundamentally changing the flow of how you produce materials.

This update is especially recommended for anyone who found the Chat/Cowork split annoying, or anyone who spends too much time creating documents and presentations.
